About a week ago, I received the news from my partner and co-creator, Tughu, that we could release the first 6 episodes of ‘The Accent.‘ It’s an adaptation of the upcoming children’s book of similar title, “The Accent.” The team had been working hard over the last 12 months on the series and with one episode to go, we didn’t think it’d hurt to release what we already had.
About “The Accent”
In “The Accent,” young readers are invited to join Caroline Smalling, a friendly and math-savvy 7-year-old, on a journey of discovery. This heart-warming contemporary fiction tale introduces us to Funke, the new girl in class, who hails from a diverse and distant land. As Caroline gets to know Funke, she’s puzzled by an unexpected twist – why does Funke refer to her as “Carorine“?…
The story is set against the backdrop of a multicultural society, “The Accent” explores the intricate tapestry of cultural differences that often lead to feelings of insecurity and misunderstanding among children. With its relatable characters and engaging narrative, this 1700-word early readers’ book takes readers on a journey of self-discovery, acceptance, and empowerment.
As Funke and Caroline navigate the complexities of their diverse backgrounds, readers witness their transformation into self-assured individuals who draw strength from their unique attributes. Through their friendship, young readers learn valuable lessons about embracing differences, fostering harmony, and breaking down cultural barriers.
Background to “The Accent”
The Accent story is inspired by my communication experience which though, was inconvenient at the time, served as an opportunity to examine the subject of accents from the perspective of a child. Granted, as an adult, I can better handle the misconceptions or stigma that come with my accent especially in a different environment such as a work place, new country or new school, I thought it might be useful to address the subject from a child’s perspective given the effect on them.
More so, it serves as a useful tool to explain the subject to my daughter whose accent is different from mine for obvious reasons. To that end, my daughter could be on either side of the accent-shaming depending on where she finds herself. Hence, the children’s book, “The Accent” was born.
